Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal star as Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist, two cowboys who fall in love while herding sheep in Wyoming in 1963 and carry on a secret relationship spanning two decades. Both men marry women—Ennis weds Alma (Michelle Williams) and Jack marries Lureen (Anne Hathaway)—while continuing their clandestine affair.
Ennis's marriage to Alma is effectively a lavender marriage born of societal pressure and internalized homophobia in the rural American West. The film devastatingly depicts the consequences for the wives who are unknowing participants in these arrangements.
